A LITTLE ABOUT ME

Hello and welcome to my website. My name is Laura and I am an artist in Chilliwack, British Columbia. I have always loved art, and I want to try everything. Although I may not be an experienced or formally trained artist, creativity flows in me, and over time I will learn to express my creativity in new ways through my art - using whichever mediums fascinate me at the time.

I have bipolar disorder, and with that comes struggles. Right now acrylic pour painting is the one thing that drowns out the ceaseless garbage harassing my brain. Art is very therapeutic and I am grateful to find relief through my creativity.

I haven't been painting very much lately, just futile attempts at watercolour. I am always starting little projects, mostly as a way to procrastinate doing more important things. But I don't care - it is important to me!

Model mania

I have recently put a few models into Harvest Coffee Shop on Mill Street in Chilliwack. I left my business cards so it is probably wise to put them on my website! I will do a better job featuring each one, but I have so many hundreds of pictures to go through in order to do them justice. I don't really expect to sell any models. To me it would feel like buying a completed puzzle. That being said, each one takes hours and hours of tedious work, cutting tiny pieces of paper for hours, losing parts constantly despite meticulous organization, gluey fingers getting stuck on tiny piece - glue everywhere, frustration, improvisation, improving things with my own supplies, and so on. They are so fun to look at, and I can see wanting to enjoy one even if you don't have the patience to spend 20+ hours constructing it. The problem is that they are extremely hard to price. Basically I have been pricing based on the cost of the kit and paying myself $1-3 per hour, which doesn't seem like good business. It is hard to honour myself as an artist with a margin like this, but I don't feel like it is appropriate to price them to reflect the hours I have spent. I have built them as a hobby, so it wasn't about how long it takes. I have also belittled the work because it comes from a kit, which I really don't think is fair to myself.

When Raj at Harvest allowed my to put a few in the shop, I just felt to happy to have them on display. I have done around 20 now, it might be nice if someone else enjoyed them instead of them sitting in a dark cabinet (plus I have 2 more on the way).
